Amon Düül II – The UA Years 1969-1974

by TW on October 11, 2010

I’ve never been particularly fond of the term, “Krautrock.”  Aside from the rather derogatory way of referring to something of German origin as “Kraut”-whatever, it also implies that somehow all rock music coming from Germany has a particular stylistic stamp.  If we reverse-engineer this notion, we should be able to hear a piece of music [...]

Somewhere in the distance, an inbred kid is playing a series of beckoning banjo chords… Anyone who knows me well understands that I have had a long-standing love/hate relationship with the band KISS.  After discussing this affliction with ClassicRockMusicBlog.com publisher, Todd Whitesel, we’ve decided to embark on a journey to define exactly what both of [...]

Suck – Time To Suck

by TW on March 31, 2010

In the grand scheme of time, 8 months is not even a blink of the eye. But it was long enough for hard rockers Suck to make their name, maybe not in North America or Europe, but certainly in their native South Africa. Formed in Johannesburg in early 1970, the four members of Suck – [...]

I have been a fan of guitarist Steve Morse from the first time I heard his playing with the Dixie Dregs. And Ian Gillan, as well, wrote some killer lyrics. “Loosen My Strings” is one of the album highlights.

Toronto’s Martin Popoff is to heavy metal what Alan Lomax was to American folk music. He is a chronicler and explorer of hard rock and metal, and probably knows more about the genre(s) than anyone else. He’s written book after book, following records and bands down paths that few others have traveled. Think you know [...]

A blast from classic rock music’s past – that’s what you’ll hear on the Michael Schenker Group’s latest album, In The Midst Of Beauty . Guitar great Schenker recruited original MSG band members Gary Barden (vocals), Neil Murray (bass), Don Airey (keyboards) and Simon Phillips (drums) to add some familiar punch to the new songs. [...]
