Best Rock Star Hair

Journey Next Best Rock Star Hair
When it came to big hair in the 1970s, I don’t think anyone did it better than Journey guitarist Neal Schon. As Journey’s Next album cover demonstrates, Schon (back left) had height, width and depth – a 3-dimensional ‘doo that still stands up as one of the greatest Afros of the decade. Great hair and a great album, too.

Stranger, live at Lake Brantley High School: January 23, 1983

Stranger Ticket Stub 300x176 Stranger, live at Lake Brantley High School: January 23, 1983

If you were in Central Florida in the early ’80s through the mid-90s, chances are you heard or saw Stranger, a four-piece rock band made up by singer Greg Billings, guitarist Ronnie Garvin, bassist Tom “King” Cardenas and drummer John Price. On Orlando’s FM rock station WDIZ, the band’s regional hit “Swamp Woman” got a fair amount of play, and Stranger frequently headlined local music club Fern Park Station. Like so many bands of the time, Stranger had the goods but could never break beyond the region. They developed a devoted following in an arc that crossed the Sunshine State from Daytona Beach across to Orlando and southwest to Tampa.

JCPenney selling record players!

Among all the Christmas sales catalogs that inevitably stuff my mailbox was a holiday home sale mailer from JCPenney. I rarely pay these any mind, but when I glanced at the front cover I was stunned to see a turntable advertised. Yes, JCPenney is now carrying turntables and not just online, this one is available for purchase in stores. Granted it’s a USB turntable, but I could not help experiencing a sense of deja vu that took me back to the days when Penneys and almost every other department store had an electronics department stocked with record players, speakers, consoles and other audio gear. What’s next? An aisle with vinyl LPs?

Reinventing Rush?

Rush Fly By Night

(Music Radar) – Neil Peart has taken to his website to discuss the state of Rush. According to the acclaimed drummer, the band will convene in Los Angeles very soon to discuss their next recording, the follow-up to 2007’s Snakes & Arrows.

“The music world – or at least the business of it – is very different now, even since 2006, when we began work on Snakes & Arrows,” Peart continues. “The importance of ‘the album’ is not what it was, and there is currently a reversion to a musical climate rather like the 1950s, when only ‘the song’ matters.”

Concert Memories – Yes: April 19, 1984. Lakeland Civic Center

Yes 1984

After scouring my house for months, I finally found my collection of rock concert ticket stubs. For whatever reason, I held onto most of the ticket stubs from rock shows that I went to in the 1980s. Those were great years. I was in high school, and rock music was everywhere. Radio stations still had disc jockeys that knew something about music and would answer the phones on a Friday night and play requests. I remember first hearing the news on Orlando, Florida, station WDIZ, that former Yes members Chris Squire and Alan White were involved in a project called “Cinema.” They had grabbed some studio time and were experimenting with possibilities.

Thin Lizzy – Are You Ready? Rockpalast Concert DVD

Thin Lizzy Are You Ready?

New York, NY (November 2, 2009)—Like American Bandstand or Top Of The Pops, German Television’s Rockpalast series has played a pivotal role in showcasing many classic bands. On November 10, Eagle Rock Entertainment will release a phenomenal performances from Thin Lizzy on DVD. [MSRP $11.98]

Paving the way for countless hard rock bands, Thin Lizzy is one of Ireland’s most legendary exports. Led by the late Phil Lynott, and rounded out by guitarists Scott Gorham and Snowy White, keyboardist Darren Wharton, and drummer Brian Downey, this collective’s use of heavy guitar licks and catchy sing-a-longs were a perfect fit for Rockpalast. They hit the stage in 1981, rousing the crowds with barroom anthems such as “Don’t Believe A Word,” “Jailbreak,” and “The Boys Are Back In Town.” This DVD, Are You Ready, follows another 2009 Thin Lizzy release, as VH1 Classic Records released the live CD Still Dangerous in March.
